Adr update goes into effect.

The biennial update of the Adr Regulations

On January 1, 2023, the two-year update of the Adr Regulation, which sets provisions for road transport of goods classified as dangerous, came into force. The application is initially mandatory in national trucking and can be postponed nationwide until July 1, 2023. This update brings some changes deemed minor on vehicle characteristics or special cases.

One of the main innovations is the extension of the obligation to appoint the Adrsafety consultantto all entities defined as "shippers." In this regard, however, the Italian Ministry of Transport has clarified that there are some exemptions for minimum quantities or occasional activities(read article).

Regarding vehicles, Adr 2023 extends the requirement for automatic fire extinguishers in the engine compartment and thermal protection for certain transport of flammable liquids and gases. In addition, tanks carrying flammable liquefied gases must mount safety valves.

As for packaging, Class 8 (corrosive materials) should be given packing group I in case the group cannot be defined based on testing.

For hazardous waste

the Regulations now stipulate ways to estimate their quantity: for packages, a list of packages indicating their type and nominal volume is added to the transport document; for containers, the estimate is based on their nominal volume; for vacuum waste tanks, the estimate is justified through an estimate provided by the shipper or through vehicle equipment.
